Full Academic Year (FAY)

Overview

Full Academic Year (FAY) is whether a student was enrolled long enough to count toward a result. Accountability does not hold a school or district responsible for a student who just arrived, so FAY decides which students are included in proficiency and growth.

Equity Analytics tracks it at two levels:

  • District FAY: the student was enrolled a full academic year in the district.
  • School FAY: the student was enrolled a full academic year at the same school.

A student can meet one and not the other. For example, a student who transferred between two schools in the same district can be district FAY but not school FAY, so they count for the district but not for the school they landed in.

Where It Lives

  • The FAY Assignments view lists active students in grades 3-12 who do not meet district or school FAY, so you can review who is being excluded.
  • The Score Tracker and Growth Tracker include district and school FAY filters so you can isolate FAY or non-FAY students.

How To Use It

  1. Open FAY Assignments to see the grade 3-12 students who are not full-year at the district or school level.
  2. Confirm the list matches reality. A student flagged not FAY who actually was enrolled all year usually points to a gap in the uploaded FAY data.
  3. Use the FAY filters on the trackers when you want to see exactly who is and is not counting.

What Data Feeds It

FAY is set from the FAY data your district uploads:

  • When a FAY file provides a student, Equity Analytics uses it to set district and school FAY for that student.
  • If no FAY file has been uploaded at all, every student defaults to FAY so results are not understated.
  • If a FAY file exists but a grade 3-12 student is not in it, that student is marked not FAY.

Common Questions

  • A student should be FAY but shows as not FAY. They were likely missing from the uploaded FAY file. Check that the file covers them.
  • Why is a student district FAY but not school FAY? They were enrolled all year in the district but moved schools, so they count for the district and not for the receiving school.
  • We never uploaded FAY data. Is everyone excluded? No. With no FAY file, everyone defaults to FAY.
