Subject Assignment from Course Codes

Overview

When you upload course records into the system, each course has a course code (assigned by MDE). To make data easier to read and analyze, Equity Analytics automatically converts these numeric codes into subject categories like Math, English, Science, etc.

This process is handled automatically by the system. If you do not see a course code listed in the sections below and believe it should be included, please reach out to support@equityanalyticsms.com for assistance. Our support team can help ensure that the course is mapped correctly.

How It Works

The system checks the course code for each record and then assigns a subject category. If the course code matches one of the rules below, the course is grouped into that subject. If it does not match, it will not be imported.

Subject Categories

• SPED (Special Education)

  • Assigned if the course code is:
    • 662001 (Gifted)
    • OR starts with 132 (K-12 SPED courses)

• English

  • Assigned if the course code matches one of the following:
    • 239901 – K-6 English Language Arts
    • 329901 – K-6 Reading
    • 230101 – English 7
    • 230104 – English 8
    • 230107 – English I
    • 230511 – Creative Writing
    • 270603 - Foundations of Journalism
    • 230110 – English II
    • 320141 - Supplemental English I
    • 320142 – Supplemental English II

• Math

  • Assigned if the course code matches one of the following:
    • 279901 – K-6 Math
    • 270101 – Math 7
    • 270710 – Math Compacted 7
    • 270720 – Math 8
    • 270721 – Math Compacted 8
    • 270390 – Foundations of Algebra
    • 270404 – Algebra I
    • 320133 - Compensatory Math I
    • 320147 - Compensatory Math II

• History

  • Assigned if the course code matches:
    • 450835 – World History
    • 450811 – U.S. History
    • 450814 – AP U.S. History

• Science

  • Assigned if the course code matches:
    • 409904 – Science 4
    • 409905 – Science 5
    • 409907 – Science 7
    • 409909 – Science 8
    • 260628 – Foundations of Biology
    • 260629 - Earth and Space Science
    • 260131 – Biology I

• Other

  • If a course code does not match any of the rules above, it will not be imported.
  • This prevents invalid or unrecognized courses from being included.

• Consistency: Teachers, schools, and districts will all see subjects grouped the same way.
• Accuracy: Only recognized courses are imported, preventing errors in reporting.
• Automation: You don’t need to manually tag subjects. The system does it for you.
